Hartsfield-Jackson held its ranking as the world’s busiest airport in 2008, both in terms of passengers and number of flights, by accommodating 90.0 million passengers and 978,824 flights. Many of these flights are domestic flights from within the United States where Atlanta serves as a major transfer point for flights to and from smaller cities throughout the Southern United States.

O’Hare International Airport, also known simply as O’Hare Airport or O’Hare Field or O’Hare, is a major airport located in the northwestern-most corner of Chicago, Illinois, United States, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of the Chicago Loop. It is the largest hub of United Airlines (whose headquarters are in downtown Chicago) and the second-largest hub of American Airlines (after Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport). It is operated by the City of Chicago Department of Aviation, associated with an umbrella regional authority.

In 2008, the airport had 881,566 aircraft operations, an average of 2,409 per day (64% scheduled commercial, 33% air taxi, 3% general aviation and <1% military). O’Hare International Airport is the second busiest airport in the nation, behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with 69,353,654 passengers passing through the airport in 2008; a -8.96% change from 2007. O’Hare also has a strong international presence, with flights to more than 60 foreign destinations. O’Hare was ranked fourth in 2005 of the United States’ international gateways, with only John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Los Angeles International Airport and Miami International Airport, serving more foreign passengers.

London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow , located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the largest and busiestairport in the United Kingdom. It is also the busiest in the European Union in terms of passenger traffic and the second busiest in terms oftraffic movements . It is the world’s third busiest airport for passenger traffic and it handles the most international passenger traffic in the world. Heathrow is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates six other UK airports. BAA is itself owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group. Heathrow is the primary hub of British Airways, BMI and Virgin Atlantic.

Located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of Central London, England, Heathrow originally was designed to have six runways in three pairs spaced approximately 120 degrees apart but now has just two parallel main runways running east-west and five terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). Terminal 5 was officially opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on 14 March 2008 and opened to passengers on 27 March 2008. Construction of Heathrow East, to replace Terminal 2 and The Queen’s Building, began in 2009, and is expected to be completed by early 2014.Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers.

Tokyo International Airport , located in ?ta, Tokyo, Japan, is one of the two primary airports serving the Greater Tokyo Area. It is commonly known as Haneda Airport (???? Haneda K?k??).

Although Haneda was originally the primary airport for the Tokyo region, it now shares that role with Narita International Airport. Haneda handles almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo while Narita handles almost all international flights. In recent years, however, international service from Haneda has expanded significantly with the addition of “scheduled charter” flights to Seoul (S. Korea), Shanghai (PRC) and Hong Kong. The Japanese government plans to expand Haneda’s international role in the future with more regional flights and off-peak charter services.

Haneda handled 66,735,587 passengers in 2008. By passenger throughput, it was the busiest airport in Asia and the fourth busiest in the world, after Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and London-Heathrow. It is the primary base of Japan’s two major domestic airlines, Japan Airlines (Terminal 1) and All Nippon Airways (Terminal 2), as well as low-cost carriers Hokkaido International Airlines, Skymark Airlines, Skynet Asia Airways, and StarFlyer. Haneda is expected to be able to handle 90 million passengers after its expansion in 2010.

LAX is the busiest airport in California in terms of flight operations, passenger traffic and air cargo activity, followed by San Francisco International Airport (SFO). LAX is also the only U.S. airport to serve 3 or more international destinations with ridership of 1 million passengers or more per year (Tokyo-Narita, London-Heathrow, Taipei).

    You must be kidding with this list. Heathrow Airport is inferior to many smaller, second-world airports. The fact that it handles more traffic makes it large, not “best.” The experience of traveling through Heathrow is abysmal, regardless of how much traffic it handles or what it’s runway-construction plans are.

    Any number of airports are superior to Heathrow in every way. Dallas-Fort Worth international Airport being one example.
